Our discourse so far on bank conversions has targeted on banks that do a full conversion and sell 100% of the available shares to depositors. There is a second sort of conversion commonly known as a ‘partial conversion’. Some mutual banks form what is sometimes known as a ‘Mutual Holding Company’. Banks with a mutual holding company structure own the bulk of shares (greater than 50%) of stock in the subsidiary bank. When a Mutual Holding Company switches to stock ownership it sells a minority (less than 50%) of the available shares to its depositors in a partial conversion. Minority shares that are sold to depositors are publicly traded on the NYSE or Naz stock exchanges.

I started little in the 1990s with bank stock conversions by normally buying several hundred shares in an IPO. My success with the bank conversions eventually enabled me to buy many thousands of stocks in more latest IPOs. The account summary below shows some of the mutual bank stocks I acquired in an IPO in the 1990s. The price of the 2,589 shares was $25,890 (2,589 x $10 per share = $25,890). The market price was $52,103 resulting in a $26,213 profit and a 101% return.

Shall we now have a look at why stocks have given the best investment returns over a period of time. When you buy a stock you become a partial owner of the company and own a share of the company. The value of your share of possession is often known as ‘stockholder’s equity’. Stockholder’s equity is basically the net worth of a company and is figured out by subtracting the debt of a company from its assets.

I am here to tell you the ‘Lost Decade ‘ of stock investing has been found! Just like Mark Twain’s death, I think the passing of the stock market has been considerably exaggerated. No, I am not innocent or a Pollyannaish. I'm sure that the broad based S&P 500 Index, the blue chip Dow Jones Economic Average and the NasDaq all produced negative returns during the past decade from Jan 1st 2000 to January 1st 2010. But all isn't lost. Rising out of the ashes of this decade is a stock asset group which has performed very well! I would like to introduce you to this asset group.

Wal-Mart will shortly be adding Radio Frequency IDentity tags to some of its clothing. RFID tags can hold more information than bar codes and so are more useful for stock control. An item bearing an RFID tag does not have to be taken out from the trolley to be scanned because the tag radios its data back to the reader on its own unique radio frequency. These tags can be put under labels or sewn into clothing because they can be very, very small.
